so where the heck am i?!
helene (santa elena) is a small island of about 900 people off the caribbean coast of honduras. it is connected to Roatan by miles of mangroves. you may have heard about Roatan if you are an avid diver... it has one of the best reefs in the world. alternative missions has been here for about 8 years and now includes a medical clinic, an english school, and many other ministries on the island. i have just jumped on the bandwagon as of february of this year... and i am loving every minute!
life here is totally different... we wake up every morning and have devotions from 7:30 to 8 am. we then have breakfast (3 square meals a day... weird) which is usually prepared by Christy (a staff member) and one of two islanders, Cheri or Linda. this food is amazing. i thought... central america... we'll have beans and rice all the time. i couldn't have been more wrong! we have biscuits, french toast, bacon, yogurt... AND authentic honduran foods such as plantains (sp?), beans, home made tortillas. and that's just breakfast.
then our days are busy busy busy... clinic or home visits for us medical people. school for the teachers. construction projects (i have no clue what they really do... but there is banging and sawing and other miscellaneous carpentry noises coming from the backyard all day). and we break for lunch... MORE food... at 12!
then back to our days... and... DINNER at 6!!! :) i have never had meals define the day so much in my life. before dinner jessica, susanna, and i have made an effort to work out in some way-- whether that be a hike to the cross or pretending like we know what we're doing on balance balls and pilates moves. after dinner we often hang out, play games, and watch movies or CSI.
so this is the life of a missionary in honduras... i work and i eat :) stay tuned for more...
